So there I was for my first pair

of specs. With the Doctor’s Letter,

the choice of NHS kids’ frames,

the absolute knowledge

that the next time in school I was

irrevocably in the past. Come for it

birdie, tweet, tweet, you’re all

in focus now though still with

allowance for some astigmatism.

That’s just a bit crooked. And means

get accustomed. You will. Wing it.

Second-hand bookshops, spring paint and coffee-

shops, by a nationally celebrated,

so they said, theatre. Niagara-

on-the-Lake is nice, memorably built.

There’s the visitor centre with well-thumbed

booklets on near Native-Americans

and true geology, the English, the

War of 1812 recalled and reviewed

in lots of historians’ styles from that side

of the river. And all refreshingly twee.

I think it an alternative version

of our cuddly past – choose your destinies

from the ones back home or here – either place.

Fudge and mints, I’ve souvenirs neatly shelved.

But in my head still a children’s playground.
